Series 1-3
Gwen was a policewoman living in Cardiff with her long-term boyfriend, Rhys, when she became wrapped up in the weird and wonderful world of Torchwood. They intervened on a murder case she was investigating, and, when she witnessed Suzie Costello, Torchwood's second-in-command, bringing a man back to life, she set out to discover all that she could about the organisation.

"It's like there's two separate worlds. There's Torchwood, and then there's real life."

When she saw a hospital porter being killed by a Weevil, she became even more determined to track down the team, eventually managing to do so. However, after being formally introduced to Jack, he used retcon to wipe her memory of everything he had told her. Gwen managed to leave a reminder to herself and subsequently remembered what she had learnt, using it to uncover a murder committed by Suzie. When Suzie killed herself, Jack hired Gwen as part of the team.

Whilst Jack was travelling with the Doctor, Gwen was in charge of the team, and felt very bitter towards him when he arrived back. She's left heartbroken following the death's of Tosh and Owen, and at first doesn't know if she can carry on working there without them. However, with the support by her fellow team members, she carries on, as Jack notes that the end is just where they start from.

Gwen in Miracle Day Gwen faces a different kind of adventure when she discovers, thanks to Clem's sense of smell, that she is three weeks pregnant, but she considers aborting the child when she realises that the world today is no place to raise a child. She soon regrets that state of mind, however, when she realises how much she loves Rhys.

When Jack sacrifices his grandson to save mankind, Gwen is left distaught when he decides to leave Earth to shake the dirt off his shoes. She is left to live her life just as it was before she came to be involved with Torchwood, only this time with the added bonus that her and Rhys are expecting their first child.

When events surrounding "Miracle Day" push Gwen to the limit, she'll need to call on resources she never knew she had and make the most terrible decisions, on behalf of all mankind.
